Approach to Refurbishment

Every refurbishment begins with a thorough assessment of your pool’s structure, finishes and equipment. We take time to understand how you use the space, identify underlying issues and agree clear objectives before proposing any work.

Our approach is practical and considered. We combine proven construction methods with modern materials and equipment, carefully planning the works to minimise disruption and ensure compatibility with your existing installation.

Throughout the project, we focus on detail, workmanship and long-term reliability—not just cosmetic improvement. The result is a refurbishment that performs efficiently, meets current standards and delivers dependable enjoyment for years to come.

Our 10 x 5m pool was put in 4 years ago by Harlequin. It was not an easy build given the clay ground but the team led by Mike overcame fairly major problems with excellent lasting results. The pool was carefully planned with several detailed visits in good time prior to the construction. There have been no significant issues since. Harlequin were quite content to only start the pool off each early summer and close it down in the autumn as I was keen to look after the general maintenance myself which takes an hour or two per week. They do however help out if needed at any time for incidental issues. We have been very pleased indeed with the function and quality of the pool. I can certainly recommend Harlequin if you are considering a new pool.

Matthew has looked after our pool at Hill Farm ever since we moved here in 2003. He is most efficient, cheerful and patient with a customer who knows nothing about the maintenance of PH levels, water clarity etc. He has become a good friend over the years.

Harlequin built our swimming pool over ten years ago and it is still in pristine condition! We could not recommend them, or their maintenance service, more highly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the work take, and when is the best time?

Timescales depend on the scope, from a liner-and-surround refresh through to a full remodel. Outdoor refurbishment is often best planned for the cooler months so the pool is ready for the season, though we work year-round. We will give you a realistic schedule once we have seen the pool, and keep you informed as the work progresses.

What if access to my pool is difficult?

Restricted access is something we deal with regularly. We have built and refurbished pools reached only by narrow side passages, steep drives and shared access, using compact plant and careful sequencing to work within the space available. Difficult access rarely rules a project out — it simply needs planning for.

I think my pool may be leaking — can you help?

Yes. A dropping water level is one of the most common and most deceptive problems we are called to, and we are well equipped to track it down. We use specialist leak detection and pressure testing to locate the source reliably — whether that is a fitting, a gasket, or pipework under pressure — and then carry out a lasting but cost-effective repair. If you suspect a leak, a call to the office is the best starting point.

Will you upgrade the heating and plant at the same time?

A refurbishment is often the natural moment to bring heating and plant up to date — whether that is moving a plant room, replacing an ageing system, or improving water treatment with UV disinfection or dosing. Air source heat pumps are our most frequently specified heating solution, and we will recommend what genuinely suits how you use the pool rather than simply what is newest.

My pool is an irregular shape — does that rule out an automatic cover?

Not necessarily. A conventional cover does need straight tracks, but that doesn’t mean an irregular pool is out of the question. In some cases the shape can be adjusted as part of a refurbishment to take a standard cover; in others, a top track system offers a workable alternative, with the tracks mounted above the surround rather than recessed within it. We’ll be straight with you about the trade-offs: a top track arrangement leaves the tracks more exposed to grit and dirt, and the cover bears against the copings as it travels, so it tends to need more maintenance and won’t match the longevity of a recessed system. For some pools, though, it’s the difference between having the convenience of an automatic cover and going without — and that’s a conversation worth having. Come and show us the pool, and we’ll talk you through what’s realistic.

Can you add an automatic cover to an existing pool?

In most cases, yes — provided the pool is rectangular, or can be made so. An automatic cover runs along straight tracks, so a rectangular shape is needed; where a pool isn’t quite there, it can often be adapted to suit as part of the work. Retrofitting a cover usually involves creating a cover pit, running the necessary channels, and lifting and reinstating copings and paving — all work our own team carry out. Because we manage the whole installation in-house, we can warrant it and remain your single point of contact for the cover afterwards.

Can you replace just the liner?

Yes — and it is one of the most effective ways to transform the appearance of a pool. We carry out any remedial repairs to the walls and floor first, replace the in-wall fittings as needed, and install the new liner — bag or on-site — to last.

What are my options for a new liner?

Most refurbishments come down to one of two liner choices, and we are happy to fit either. A preformed bag liner is made to your pool’s measurements at the factory in heavy-duty 30-gauge material and fitted on site — a cost-effective, durable and long-proven solution that suits the great majority of pools, and one we install week in, week out. An on-site liner is our premium option: welded and finished in the pool itself, it gives a richer, more tailored result and a deeper, more inviting water colour. Both are reinforced PVC membranes built to last; the right choice comes down to budget, pool shape and the finish you are after, and we will give you an honest steer.

We didn’t build your pool — can you still help?

Absolutely. We refurbish and maintain pools regardless of who originally installed them. A first visit lets us assess the structure, plant and finishes, and set out honestly what is worth doing.

Do you carry out the landscaping and surrounds as well?

We do, and for an outdoor pool it matters as much as anything below ground. A well-finished surround turns a pool into an elegant part of the garden rather than a feature dropped into it. Our designers and landscapers work alongside the pool team so the finished setting feels of a piece, and we offer a range of edge finishes — coping stones, paving, decking and stone terracing — along with pathways, changing areas and pool lighting for evening use. The landscaping is carried out by experienced craftsmen, so the finish around the pool is every bit as considered as the pool itself.

Can you remodel the pool as well as refurbish it?

Yes. Alongside straightforward refurbishment we can alter steps and seating, change the surround, reshape elements of the poolside, and even extend the pool itself to suit how you want to live with it. Past projects have included adding shallow-end seating benches, building new step units, extending pools to a larger footprint, and enlarging paved areas for entertaining.

What does a typical refurbishment involve?

It varies with the pool, but common work includes replacing a tired or faded liner, renewing copings and paving, replacing in-wall fittings, upgrading or relocating plant and heating, and fitting an automatic safety cover. Some projects are a straightforward liner and surround refresh; others extend to remodelling steps, seating and the wider poolside. We will scope the work around what your pool needs and how you want to use it.

Is it worth refurbishing an older pool, or should I replace it?

In most cases a sound pool structure is well worth refurbishing — it is usually the liner, finishes, cover and plant that age, rather than the shell itself. An older concrete pool can be drained and relined to restore it to its former glory without the expense of rebuilding, whatever the shape of the pool. We have refurbished pools we originally built decades ago, bringing them fully up to date while keeping their proportions and character. Where a pool genuinely has reached the end of its life, we will tell you plainly and talk through replacement instead.
